JU falls to Ohio State at the Moe's Classic
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Six different players scored for Jacksonville but it wasn't quite enough as the Dolphins men's lacrosse team dropped a 9-6 decision to No. 19 Ohio State in game two of the 2013 Moe's Southwest Grill Classic held at EverBank Field. No. 15 Penn State defeated No. 9 Denver 15-12 in the first game of the day.
"Its a long season, last year when we played here and beat Navy it might have been our best game of the season," said Head Coach Guy Van Arsdale. "I told our guys that we know this wasn't our best game. It's a long journey and we know that we can build on this in a different way and we can make this year much different then what we went through last year."
After Ohio State (2-0) struck first, JU (0-2) finally dented the scoreboard on a Rob Wertz (Lancaster, Pa.) goal midway through the first half. The Dolphins would then grab a 2-1 lead by taking advantage of a man-up opportunity a minute later when sophomore Ari Waffle (Manlius, N.Y.) found the back of the cage off an assist from senior Cameron Mann (Hamilton, Ontario).
Three straight goals by the Buckeyes to close out the quarter put JU down but not out. Trailing 4-2 after one quarter the Dolphins used back-to-back goals from Mann and senior TJ Kenary (Alpharetta, Ga.) to draw even with Ohio State once more.
All-American Logan Schuss quickly answered for the Buckeyes however as the Dolphins found them selves down 5-4 at the half.
JU stayed close in the second half, but a 3-1 advantage in the fourth quarter eventually sealed the win for Ohio State.
Junior Pete DeLuca (Millersville, Pa.) made nine saves in goal for JU.
"This is our first group of seniors that are four-year players, we've never had that before so everything to an extent everything is new," said Van Arsdale. "I'm proud of the effort and I think we are on the cusp of doing some things and people are starting to understand that we have a great University and a great opportunity for young kids to come play college lacrosse."
JU returns to action on March 2 at D.B. Milne Field against High Point.
