There are basically two different types of Government Health Insurance programs, Medicare and Medicaid. Medicare is a federal insurance program while Medicaid is federally funded but administered by the state. Medicare provides protection for people sixty-five and older, and for those under sixty-five who are disabled and entitled to Social Security benefits. Medicare also provides for those of any age with permanent kidney failure. Medicare consists of two parts: hospitalization and supplemental medical care. To apply for part A, contact your local Social Security office. Medicaid provides protection for people of any age who are unable to pay for health care. To be eligible, it isn't necessary for you to have contributed to Social Security or to have been on welfare. Check with you local welfare office if you are in need of government assisted health care or consult an insurance agent.
