PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla.-- Dane Boggs walks his dog, "Catch" down Ponte Vedra Boulevard every day, but not without risk.
"There's not enough room for everyone," he said.
The 2.7-mile stretch of road near Boggs' home has no sidewalks, putting pedestrians right in the way of traffic.
"There goes a big truck," he says as a semi whizzes several feet behind him. "How about that you ride your bike with a big truck behind you or a mother with a stroller? It's just not safe!"
Installing sidewalks comes with a hefty price tag of $400,000, but life is priceless, and for neighbors like Boggs, safety is worth every penny.
Neighbors have decided they're going to pay for 60 percent of the sidewalk. St Johns County and municipal services will pay for the rest.
"We pay taxes so we really do need their support," said Boggs.
But first they have to reach their goal. Neighbors have raised more than $100,000, but still need more than $100,000 more, and the clock is ticking.
"A lady and her dog were just hit by a car," said Boggs. "People are getting hurt all the time."
The neighborhood hopes to have all the donations it needs by spring to break ground on the new sidewalk by summer.
