ST AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- It's a neighborhood where kids are usually out playing. But this time witnesses say two kids were driving a car and crashed into another car, leaving a fence a mangled mess.

"There was a kid behind the wheel," said witness Lance Edwards. "I think the kid behind the wheel was probably about 13."

Edwards says he couldn't believe his eyes. He says two kids, driving what the St. John's County Sheriff's Office confirms is a stolen car, came down Ford Street and tried turning onto Butler Avenue into oncoming traffic.

"They were flying, they tried to go right, hit the car! It knocked 'em way back in here in the ditch," Edwards said.

That's when Edwards' friend grabbed his camera and started rolling. In exclusive video obtained by Action News, you can see a kid jump out of the passengers side, run in a circle and head back to the car. That's when neighbors sprang into action and pinned him to the ground. Edwards says the driver took off.

"They just looked really confused, like they didn't know what the hell to do after they hit the car!"

The St. John's County Sheriffs Office took the 12-year-old passenger into custody on an outstanding warrant for violation of house detention.

Deputies tell Action News he's the same passenger in a stolen car crash that happened a week and a half ago a few blocks away.

Neighbors just hope there won't be a third time. They say this crash could have claimed someone's life.

"There's a lot of kids up and down this street all the time, playing, throwing the football back and forth. Any of the kids could have got hit. They hit the car, they didn't even see the car," Edwards said.

FHP is investigating the crash. A 63-year-old man was behind the wheel of the car that was hit.
