ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla.-- A deadly Christmas car crash that killed a newlywed St. Augustine couple has a mother looking for answers.
Robin Osgood is suffering the death of her daughter Jennifer Leonardi and new son-in-law Trevor Leonardi. She cried over a roadside memorial at the site of the accident Wednesday night wondering how something so horrible happened on one of the happiest days of the year.
"I just had to come by and see if we could figure out what was going on," said Osgood.
Witnesses say the Leonardis' truck came out of nowhere, missing the curve at the entrance of Anastasia State Park, crashing into a tree.
"There were no brakes, it was too fast," said witness, Chad Bowman. "It was too fast, it seemed like when he got to the beginning of the parking lot it was full fledged, like he just went even harder."
Bowman tells Action News he tried to break into the back of the vehicle with a skateboard and make a rescue but he was too late.
"It was smokey, I stuck my head in and it was just a wreck," he said.
A terrible end to the beginning of what family called the start to a beautiful life of marriage. Osgood says she takes comfort in the fact that they passed together and in the roadside memorial adorned in their very last Christmas present to each other; a poinsettia from the Leonardi family nursery.
