JACKSONVILLE, Fla.-- As students return from Thanksgiving vacation at Wolfson High School on Tuesday, they'll be struggling with the loss of one of their peers.
Jordan Davis,a 17-year-old student, was killed Friday evening in the back of his friend's SUV after an argument over his loud music. Michael Dunn, 45, fired at the vehicle Jordan was sitting in.
"Why? Why him? He never had any problems with anybody," said Darrian Flowers, a young man who calls himself Jordan's best friend.
Flowers fought back tears trying to understand the senseless killing.
"I can't believe it, I still can't accept the fact that he's gone yet," said Flowers. "But I know tomorrow when I go to school and I go to our chill spot where we chill every day he's not going to be there."
What stings Flowers almost as much as the death of his friend is the reality that it could have been him. He could have been in that SUV where Jordan was shot.
"I was supposed to go with him," said Flowers. "But I told him I had stuff I had to do so I kind of felt like I could have changed it if I was there."
Still Flowers is trying not to look back at what could have been and focus on what will be. He says the two teens had planned on joining the army together after graduation. It's a mission he'll now have to complete for them both.
"I'm going to do it for him," said Flowers. "I'm going to graduate for him, I'm going to go to the Army for him, I'm going to make it for him."
