JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The fatal shooting of a local teenager at a gas station became part of a Sunday Night Football halftime commentary on gun control from broadcaster Bob Costas.
During the Cowboys-Eagles football game, Costas quoted an op-ed piece by Jason Whitlock, a writer in Kansas City who penned an article about the murder-suicide by Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher. Police say Belcher killed his girlfriend before taking his own life on Saturday.
Whitlock wrote of the "current gun culture" in America, saying it "ensures that more and more domestic disputes will end in the ultimate tragedy, and that more convenience store confrontations over loud music coming from the car will leave more teenage boys bloodied and dead."
The confrontation over loud music from a car is an indirect reference to the killing of 17-year-old Jordan Davis. The teen was in an SUV with friends when another driver told them to turn the music down. The incident erupted into gunfire and Jordan getting killed. Police arrested
Michael Dunn in the shooting. He claimed the
teens threatened him with a shotgun, however, police did not find any weapon or drugs on the teenagers or in their SUV.
Davis was
laid to rest Saturday afternoon near Atlanta.
