ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla.-- You can never have too much grease. That's what the city of St. Augustine and St. Johns County believe. They're calling on everyone to bring theirs forward and so far, people are responding.
"We've had a great turnout. We've collected over 70 gallons of used oil so far," said Glabra Skipp, Environmental Inspector with the city of St. Augustine.
The purpose? Take the grease that might otherwise end up in a landfill and turn it into biodiesel fuel. The result lowers fuel costs for the county and helps protect the environment.
"The county road and bridge vehicles run it. County, truck, things of that nature," biodiesel tech Ray Inman said.
Once technicians receive the grease, they test it, process it and get it ready for use. Only a percentage is put into the vehicles but we're told it's still a big help. Homeowners also benefit by keeping their pipes clear and helping their community become less dependent on foreign oil.
"Turkey grease. A lot of fire oil. A lot of people have had it in their garage for a year or two years and didn't know what to do with it and we're just trying to give people and outlets so they won't throw it down the drain," Skipp said.
