JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Lyanne Vera was a Good Samaritan every day. The 21-year-old was killed Sunday sitting in the driver's seat of her car. Vera was stopped on the Buckman Bridge to pick up a friend whose car had broken down.

"She came there to help a friend," said her father, Lawrence. "Among her group of friends she was very noted in doing that. She had a reputation for going out of her way to help people."

It was just after sunset, but Vera's father says her emergency flashers were on.

"Nine out of 10 times a person, to avoid an accident, will hastily shift to another lane."

But the Florida Highway Patrol tells Action News that didn't happen. As her friend climbed into her passenger seat, a pickup truck veered off the road, and crushed Vera's car killing her instantly.

It is a tragic end to a life full of promise, as Lyanne was a studying to work in the medical field and continue her love of helping others.

Lyanne's father blames reckless driving for taking his daughter's life.

"Don't take anything in life for granted and when you're out there on the roads under any conditions, it doesn't matter, drive safely."

Lyanne's friend suffered minor injuries.

Charges against the driver of the truck, 41-year-old Paul Fort, are pending.
