JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- This weekend's great weather has people out and about in Northeast Florida and some of the busiest places you go during your day might also be one of the easiest places to catch the flu.

Saturday night is date night for a lot of couples. Ty Miller and his girlfriend are no exception. But there was one looming concern on Miller's mind during their trip this week to the silver screen.

"I've seen the reports on the internet that it's sweeping the eastern sea board states and I just try to do anything that I can do to prevent getting the flu," said Miller.

As movie theater workers rip through and hand out thousands of tickets this weekend, Miller and many others tell Action News they are taking preventative steps to fight the flu.

"You always want to wash your hands. Be careful of touching common surfaces that other people's hands have touched and I carry hand sanitizer in my car as well," said Miller.

Movie-goer Amanda Graham recently recovered from the virus. "I guess it's pretty frightening now that there's such an outbreak of the flu."

The flu is widespread in all but three states as the nation grapples with an earlier-than-normal season. But some good news this weekend, the number of hard-hit areas declined.

According to the Center for Disease Control, Florida's flu activity is now classified as "moderate."

Whatever the threat level, Miller says it won't keep him from date night. "You've got to live your life."

According to health officials, at least 20 deaths have been reported so far this season.
