Five-year-old stable at hospital after being shot in the head at his Northwest Jacksonville home
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A 5-year-old boy is in the hospital tonight after being shot in the head in his Northwest Jacksonville home.
Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Chief Tom Hackney said the call came in about 7:30 p.m Tuesday. He said a woman who lived at the home heard the shot, saw a broken window and found her son on the couch with a gunshot to the head.
The boy was taken to Shands Jacksonville and is in stable condition.
According to Hackney, neighbors say they heard two shots fired, but no one witnessed the shooting. Police believe the shot came from a shotgun.
"This is a very serious case," said Hackney. "Thankfully he is OK, but this could have been a much worse situation."
Police say they believe the shooting was random, and not related to anyone else living in the home. They have not responded to the home in the past.
Police ask anyone with information to call Duval County Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
