ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla.-- Michael Osgood is still haunted by the tragic death of his step daughter Jennifer Leonardi and her newlywed husband, Trevor. The couple lost control and crashed into a tree on Christmas night, along this so-called deadly curve on Anastasia Boulevard.
"Just kind of taking it day by day, moment by moment," he said. "Trying to focus on the good life they and not on the loss we're now experiencing."
It's a spot that's seen its fair share of accidents in the last decade, including another crash into this local surf shop.
But the Florida Department of Transportation is now trying to prevent more people from getting hurt. Action News has learned they want to install additional markers along the curve to alert drivers, including raised reflectors in the pavement and arrowed signs on the side of the road. Osgood says he's happy the DOT is finally taking action.
"I'm glad that they're looking into it and trying to figure out a way to make the curve a little safer," he said.
But he doubts the proposed changes will be enough.
"I think the primary need is a guard rail separating the road from the parking lot behind it," he said.
A parking lot that is home to dozens of children who use a nearby skate park. Osgood says losing his family was painful enough, but the loss of a young child would be unbearable.
He's worried reflectors and signs won't protect kids at play and hopes more will be done. City officials tell Action News that they are also working on a plan to protect the fire station just steps away from where the most recent crash took place.
