JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- When veteran Gary Sevick spots a tattered American flag, it breaks his heart.
"We're honoring our veterans. We're honoring America. And you cannot let that happen. You cannot let the flag be torn, frayed. It's not right," says Sevick, the Commander of VFW Post 3270 in Jacksonville Beach.
One flag that's flying outside a bar on Beach Boulevard is so torn apart, it's missing stars and stripes.
"This year we had major winds and that's what it's about and once a year we hire a company to come in and change out the two flags," the owner told Action News.
The company doesn't come until April but the owner said she would remove the flag sooner if she could reach it. It's hanging from a light pole, high in the air.
Sevick says he can help. He always has a new American flag in the trunk of his car. Sevick will replace any tattered flag for free.
Another flag with frayed ends and tears is hanging outside a McDonald's on Merrill Road. The restaurant told Action News a new flag will be put up on Monday.
Sevick says it's important to respect and honor the American flag. The VFW works with the Boy Scouts to retire old flags.
