JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Local emergency crews were entertained by actor Bill Murray as he helped announce a major donation of life saving equipment.
Firehouse Subs donated $300,000 in equipment to sixteen north Florida agencies at a time they need it most.
"We plan to use the money to fund new K-9 search teams, which we could not afford otherwise," said Officer Ben Tobias with the Gainesville Police Department.
"It's a very difficult time with all of our budget cuts, and this is huge for us," added Chief Martin Senterfitt of the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department.
Bill Murray was also on hand to entertain department leaders. Murray will soon sponsor a charity golf tournament in conjunction with Firehouse Subs.
Mayor Alvin Brown and Governor Rick Scott arrived moments after the event began, which gave Murray time to challenge the audience to give both the silent treatment as they entered the restaurant on Beach Boulevard. The audience did as Murray asked and it resulted in awkward moments and outbursts of laughter as each entered the room.
"I didn't know what was going on," laughed Mayor Brown. "It was great to have him here and this is a great benefit to the men and women who serve this community every day."
