MACCLENNY, Fla. -- The Superintendent of Baker County Schools and Sheriff Joey Dobson are meeting tonight over proposals to expand school security in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre.

All middle and high schools in Baker County have armed deputies patrolling the hallways, but leaders are now looking at plans to add deputies to two elementary schools and the 4th and 5th grade center.

Sheriff Dobson told Action News the school district pays $20,000 for each of the three deputies in the middle and high schools, and the sheriff's office covers the remainder of the costs.

Dobson says there are only 45 deputies in the county, and the funding doesn't exist right now to put the deputies into the elementary schools, unless cuts are made elsewhere.

Dobson is meeting with Superintendent Sherrie Raulerson to go over ideas, to see if there's a way to make the plan happen.

There will be a follow-up meeting on Monday, and possibly a resolution, when kids go back to class.
