JACKSONVILLE Fla.-- In the wake of the Newtown, Conn. tragedy, guns have come under fire, particularly assault rifles like the one used by Adam Lanza to take the lives of 20 innocent children.

"I have a permit to carry a pistol," said Tom Patania of Jacksonville, "but I don't understand why people want assault rifles."

Many argue that gun control won't prevent another massacre; that people kill, not guns, so what can be done to stop mass killings?

Former FBI agent and firearms instructor Ron Wirth says it all starts with education.

"With the right comes the responsibility if you don't want the responsibility don't get the right," said Wirth.

Wirth says becoming a responsible gun owner is critical to preventing mass killings.

"If you're going to own a gun, have a lesson, understand how the gun works keep it locked up, keep it safe, and keep it away from children," said Wirth.
